Breakfast with the American Friends of IHES
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the Consulate General of France hosted the American Friends of the IHES – Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques – in presence of Mr. Philippe Lalliot, Consul General of France in New York, Mr. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Director of the IHES, and Mr. Renaud Dutreil, President of LVMH Inc. and President of the Friends’ Association of IHES.
The Institut de Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES) was founded in 1958, by the initiative of Motchane, a mathematics-passionate industrialist, who had the ambition to create a research center which would become the European counterpart to the American Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of Princeton.
"Gathering this morning both finance and mathematics’ worlds"
Since it was founded, the Institut has evolved in accordance to its founder’s vision: it has indeed become a point of reference amidst the international scientific community, with indisputable success in mathematics and theoretical physics. An environment of free discussion among scientists – whatever their specialty and origins – also became one of the traits of its attractiveness. On the institutional level, the IHES enjoys the status of a recognized foundation serving the general needs of the public, since 1981.
