February Cultural Highlights: Jacques-Louis David Meets Kehinde and More! [fr]
The month of February offers both artistic and literary highlights to lift your spirits!
A new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum entitled Jacques-Louis David Meets Kehinde Wiley features Nigerian-American portrait painter Kehinde Wiley. His Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps (2005) is displayed for the very first time alongside its portrait of inspiration, Bonaparte Crossing the Alps (1799) by Jacques-Louis David. The juxtaposition of Wiley’s work with its nineteenth-century counterpart creates an artistic dialogue that touches on themes of race, masculinity, and power in both the representation of leaders and their consequent legacy in history.
Also, this month, celebrated novelist and short story writer Javad Djavahery is embarking on a US Tour for the release of his English language debut novel My Part of Her, translated by Emma Ramadan. Djavahery, an Iranian political refugee who settled in France, has composed short stories and novels in Persian and French. My Part of Her constructs the powerful story of a group of friends during their summer on the Caspian Sea whose lives and relationships are forever altered by an episode of intense betrayal and the threatening political unrest of the 1978 Iranian Revolution.
Djavahery will present his latest work from February 28 to March 12 in Boston, Providence, Brooklyn, LA, and San Francisco.
