“Rock ‘n’ Petanque”
On Sunday June 24th, 2012, the Consulate General of France in New York held the “Rock’n Pétanque” Day, a Block-Party honoring a passion shared by many French people, together with a growing number of Americans,
Combining Rock ’n’ Roll and Pétanque
From 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., the 74th street block between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue was closed, in order to host a Pétanque tournament in the pure Marseille tradition. The winner brought home the biggest book ever to be published: “The Foxyladyproject”, a photo collection of legendary guitars from the 20th century – in full scale.
With rock music in the background, different activities and stands from the Provence region in France were open to the public, with the possibility of winning two Air France plane tickets. In the evening, one of the greatest French Rock musicians, Louis Bertignac, gave an exceptional concert at the Consulate General of France in New York (by invitation only) – a place he’s familiar with, having given his first performance there last year, as part of his Grizzly concert tour.

Pétanque-Mania, the new New York trend
“Traditionally, the Pétanque is a game associated with images of the Provence region, just like olive oil or the Soap of Marseille. But beyond the cliché, it is an actual sport which attracts more and more young people, and earns more fans from all over the world, beginning with New York and the contests at Bryant Park.” Philippe Lalliot, Consul General of France in New York
“My dream is to form an educational project with the city, in order to reach out to young people in different neighborhoods. If we can arouse their interest, we could train the next Michael Jordan of Pétanque!” Xavier Thibaud, Sports Director at the New York Pétanque Club
