Social assistance

The Consulate is responsible for a budget dedicated to social assistance, in order to support French citizens experiencing difficulties across the tri-state area of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey, as well as Bermuda.
The budget is prepared every year by a Consular council on Protection and social action, presided by the Consul general, that examines the applications.

Monthly allowances

- Solidarity allowance
Attributed to French citizens :
- over 65 years old (or over 60 in case of work incapacity)
- with low income

- Disabled adult allowance
Attributed to French citizens :
- over 20 years old
- with low income
- holding a disability card issued by the "Maison départementale des Personnes Handicapées".
The consulate is at your disposal to assist you in order to obtain this card.

- Disabled child allowance
Attributed to persons responsible for the daily care of a disabled French child or teenager
- under 20 years old
- holding a disability card issued by the "Maison départementale des Personnes Handicapées".
The consulate is at your disposal to assist you in order to obtain this card.

The attribution of this allowance is not based on income criteria. However, if the child receives an American social benefit, or a benifit from his parents’ employer due to his disability, the amount of that benefit will be deducted from the allowance provided by the Consulate.

- Short term allowance
- Provided to support to our fellow citizens for a few months, following difficulties due to specific circumstances (family issues, loss of employment)
- Granted under exceptional circumstances following a careful review of personal situation.
- Subject to funds availability.

- Monthly support for children in distress

One-time exceptional financial aid

Provided under exceptional circumstances to our fellow citizens, in order to cover basic needs for a short term period.

How to apply for social assistance

Contact the social service of the Consulate. An interview will be set at the Consulate, by phone or at your place in case of specific difficulties, in order to discuss your situation, assess your difficulties and review your incomes and expenses.
