Vital Records and Citizenship Services Merged in Washington

Starting August 1st, 2015, the Consulate Generals of Washington and Los Angeles will combine all vital records and citizenship services for French nationals residing in the United States. The Consulate of Los Angeles will serve French citizens residing in the Western part of the United States, and the Washington, D.C. Consulate will serve the Eastern part of the U.S. For all other services (passports, national ID cards, visas, etc.), French consular posts in the United States will keep their own jurisdiction over American states belonging to their consular district.

In practice, this means that as of August 1st, 2015, if you wish to have a birth, marriage, divorce, adoption, or death transcribed on French vital records registers, and that event occurred in one of the states belonging to the district of the Consulate General of France in New York, i.e. Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and (outside the United States) Bermuda, you will have to send your request via postal mail, or to submit your request in person with the vital records and citizenship services of the Consulate General of France in Washington.

Additionally, for all individuals residing in the states mentioned above, applications to acquire, reintegrate or repudiate French citizenship will need to be submitted via postal mail or in person at the Consulate General of France in Washington, D.C.
If most services will be performed via postal mail, some will require a personal appearance: registering declarations of citizenship (acquisition or renunciation), establishing a French birth certificate within 30 days following the event, acknowledging paternity or maternity, or declaring a name change.

Relevant information pertaining to applications and how to send the required documents via postal mail will be posted online on the Consulate General of France in Washington’s website, in the weeks preceding the beginning of the new system.
